Sania Mirza and Elena Vesnina reaches 2011 French Open Doubles final

Paris: India’s Sania Mirza and and her Russian  partner Elena Vesnina carried on their giant-killing run in the French Open doubles when they defeated the fourth seeded pair of America Liezel Huber and Lisa Raymond to enter the final.

The Indo-Russian pair beat their American opponents 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in a closely fought encounter.

This is the first time that Sania has reached the women’s doubles final in a Grand Slam event.
Before this tournament, the quarter-final appearances in the 2007 US Open and 2008 Wimbledon were her best performances so far at the big stage.

In the final they will take on the unseeded Czech Republic pairing of Andrea Hlavackova and Lucie Hradecka. Hlavackova and Hradecka upset the third seeded pair of beat USA’s Vania King and Kazakhstan’s Yaroslava Shvedova in straight sets 6-3 6-3 in the other semi-final.

This gives the seventh-seeded Indo-Russian pair a great chance to win their first doubles title.

In their quarter-final match Mirza-Vesnina had shocked the top seeds Gisela Dulko and Flavia Pennetta in straight sets and with this win they will go into the final as the favourites.
